The first release this month was Sean Shibe and tenor Karim Sulayman’s new conceptual album, Broken Branches. The album includes music ranging from Dowland, Monteverdi, Britten, Rodrigo, Takemitsu, Harvey, and Chaker, to traditional songs from the Middle East, scrutinizing the close cultural and musical ties between East and West.

“Broken Branches grew from a discomfort at aspects of repertoire generally explored through art song with the guitar; or perhaps more accurately a desire to present certain repertoire in a way that makes uncomfortable aspects of it clearer…”

The start of the month also saw the release of Tamara Stefanovich​’s recent collaboration with WDR Symphony Orchestra and conductor Mariano Chiacchiarini, Hans Abrahamsen: Left, Alone, on Winter & Winter. Hans Abrahamsen is one of the most important contemporary composers. On the album Tamara performs Left, alone, a still fairly new piano concerto for the left hand, which swirls out of the darkness to a jagged motor rhythm.

Randall Goosby​’s keenly awaited second album was released this month with Decca Classics. Randall Goosby, Yannick Nézet-Séguin • Max Bruch & Florence Price Violin Concertos is an impressive collaboration with the Grammy Award-winning partnership of Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Philadelphia Orchestra cementing Goosby’s ever-growing stature as a multifaceted talent.

With Orchestre National de France, Victor Julien-Laferrière released his new album this month dedicated to two French composers, Dutilleux: Tout un monde lointain – Dusapin : Outscape, on Alpha Classics.

The album explores poetic and philosophical expressions. It follows from the meaning of the word ​‘Outscape’, ends with a famed quotation of Baudelaire’s poem Les Fleurs du mal ​“Tout un monde lointain, absent, presque défunt (A whole distant world, absents and almost defunct)”.
