Patricia Kopatchinskaja and Randall Goosby are announced as Southbank Centre’s new Artists-in-Residence for 2023/24 season.
In the season’s opening weekend, Kopatchinskaja performs in a trio with pianist Polina Leschenko and clarinettist Reto Bieri for a contemporary music programme, including some of Kopatchinskaja’s own compositions. Then, in December, Kopatchinskaja ‘transforms herself into a human puppet’ in a staged version of Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire, as part of the Southbank’s Contemporary Edit designed to highlight boundary-pushing developments in classical music.
Violinist Randall Goosby uses his residency to explore a contrasting range of repertoire. Goosby’s recital in October sees him reunite with pianist Zhu Wang for a programme including music by Florence Price and Antonin Dvořák. In January, Goosby is again joined by pianist Zhu Wang, violist and narrator Jameel Martin and cellist Eddie Pogossian for a special event Intersections: Black Music & Words, where music by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor and Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson are interspersed with spoken words, including original poems.
