Nine HarrisonParrott artists have been shortlisted for the 2014 Gramophone Awards across the Concerto, Contemporary and Opera categories.
In the Concerto category, previous Gramophone and ECHO-Klassik Award-winner Patricia Kopatchinskaja is nominated for her Naïve recording of Prokofiev and Stravinsky Violin Concertos with London Philharmonic Orchestra and Vladimir Jurowski. Jean-Efflam Bavouzet receives his second nomination in this year’s awards, having already been shortlisted for Artist of the Year, for his Prokofiev Piano Concertos Cycle on Chandos with the BBC Philharmonic conducted by Gianandrea Noseda.
Also shortlisted in the Concerto category is Hannu Lintu’s Avie recording of Sibelius and Adés’ Violin Concertos with violinist Augustin Hadelich, and Neeme Järvi conducting the Residentie Orkest Den Haag on Sharon Bezaly’s BIS disc of the Great Works for Flute and Orchestra.
Four HarrisonParrot artists feature on the Contemporary shortlist this year. This includes the world premiere recording of John Adams’ The Gospel According to the Other Mary (Deutsche Grammophon) featuring tenor Russell Thomas, a work described by the Los Angeles Times as a “21st Century Masterpiece”.
Opus Arte’s DVD of George Benjamin’s Written on Skin featuring Barbara Hannigan as Agnès is also shortlisted in the Contemporary category along with the Augusta Read Thomas’ Orchestral Works (Nimbus Alliance), which features Oliver Knussen conducting Carillon Sky with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
The Contemporary shortlist also includes the ECM recording of Erkki-Sven Tüür’s Symphony No. 7 and Piano Concerto, conducted by Paavo Järvi with the hr-Sinfonieorchester.
Finally, the production of Britten’s Peter Grimes, released on DVD with Arthaus Musik, is nominated in the Opera category. Steuart Bedford conducted this unique production, sung live on Aldeburgh beach where the singers performed live on to the accompaniment of a pre-recorded orchestra. This production has won BBC Music Magazine Award and the Britten Anniversary Production Award in the 2014 International Opera Awards.
