Following his successful company debut last season as Voland in a new production of Meister und Margarita, Derek Welton returns to Staatsoper Hamburg to make his role debut as Escamillo in Jens-Daniel Herzog’s production of Carmen. The production, opening on 9 October, is conducted by Axel Kober. This significant debut follows a number of successful company and role debuts for Derek throughout Europe recently, which include Harasta (The Cunning Little Vixen) at Opéra de Lille under Franck Ollu, Wagner (Faust) at Festspielhaus Baden-Baden in a new production under Thomas Hengelbrock and Graf Dominik (Arabella) at Osterfestspiele Salzburg under Christian Thielemann.
Later this season, Derek returns to Staatsoper Hamburg to create the role of Regolo in the world premiere of Beat Furrer’s La Bianca notteunder Simone Young, and reprises his role as Graf Domnik under Christian Thielemann in his company debut at Sächsische Staatsoper Dresden.
