Three HarrisonParrott Artists perform at the Last Night of the Proms
8/9/2014
As Chief Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Sakari Oramo conducts the Last Night of the Proms on 13 September.
Oramo has appeared in several Proms this year, all of which have received critical acclaim including The Telegraph who declared “I can feel National Treasure status beckoning already.”
Joining Oramo is 2014 Proms Featured Artist Janine Jansen who returns for her final Proms appearance this year with Chausson’s Poème and Ravel’s Tzigane. The two artists have performed a number of times together at the festival this season, including a Chamber Prom where Oramo made his Proms debut as a violinist and on 13 August when Janine performed Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending. Her performance received widespread critical acclaim with the Evening Standard commenting “it was this sense of pathos alongside the lyrical that made Janine Jansen’s reading so special.”
Jansen and Oramo join forces again at the end of September when they give three performances with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra as part of the Orchestra’s Brahms festival.
Also performing at the Last Night is John Daszak who sings Strauss’ Taillefer alongside Elizabeth Watts (soprano) and Roderick Williams (baritone). His performance follows a number of role debuts last season, including Siegfried in Dieter Dorn’s new production for the Grand Théâtre de Genève.
As well as traditional Last Night repertoire, the programme features two world premieres: Gavin Higgins’ Velocity — a BBC commission — and a new choral version of Sir Malcolm Arnold’s Peterloo Overture with lyrics by Sir Tim Rice. Also included in the programme is John Tavener’s Song for Athene as a tribute to the composer who died last year, and a unique Mary Poppins singalong medley to mark the 50th anniversary of the film’s release.
The full concert will be broadcast live on BBC Television and BBC Radio 3.
