City Lights
Lisa Batiashvili
“For more than two years we put all our energy, love and dedication into this project. It became my most personal musical journey.”
Lisa Batiashvili
Lisa Batiashvili’s album takes the listener across the world with eleven carefully chosen pieces that represent the most important cities in her life, and now you can experience it live on stage!
The idea came out of a conversation between Batiashvili and her friend the composer-arranger Nikoloz Rachveli. Batiashvili says: “Chaplin was very popular in Georgia when I was a child. He was a multi-talent, not only acting and making movies, but writing gorgeous music. For me, he represents the beauty and creative imagination of the 20th century.” Their idea of creating a suite inspired by Charlie Chaplin’s music and his films grew into an autobiographical concept based on key cities in Batiashvili’s life, each of which has some personal, musical or violinistic connection. Thus City Lights was born and would see Batiashvili work together with Rachveli to create one of her most personal projects ever – an album, and now stage show, that crosses genres, mixes memory, place, sounds and music to powerful and haunting effect.
Lisa herself is the guide throughout the performance both on stage and screen to take you on an even deeper personal journey from her native Georgia to Paris with the late Michel Legrand’s Paris Violon and then to Ralph Siegel’s Berlin and Buenos Aires, brought to life by Piazzolla.
City Lights shares the beautiful melodies from Cinema Paradiso and Chaplin’s own compositions that encapsulate the spirit of Hollywood. With all time classics from Dvorak and Strauss, new arrangements of J.S. Back by Anders Hillborg to an enchanting song about the magic of London by Katie Melua, the programme does not fail to delight and bring new meaning to Batiashvili’s global career.
