Arvo Volmer Appointed Principal Guest Conductor of Japan Century Orchestra
1/4/2026
Arvo Volmer has been appointed Principal Guest Conductor of Japan Century Orchestra, effective from 1 April 2026 with an initial three season tenure. The appointment follows his recent debut appearance in November 2025 conducting Pärt, Britten and Beethoven.
Speaking about his appointment, Volmer says:
“I am deeply honoured to be appointed Principal Guest Conductor of Japan Century Orchestra. From our very first collaboration last November, I was struck by the curiosity, and commitment of the musicians, as well as the spirit of openness that defines this orchestra.
This appointment marks the beginning of an exciting artistic journey. As Principal Guest Conductor, I look forward to developing a close and enduring relationship with the musicians, exploring both core repertoire and new perspectives, and building programmes that speak with depth and imagination.
I would like to thank the musicians, management, board, and Joe Hisaishi san for their confidence and warm welcome. I am very much looking forward to the seasons ahead and to sharing many memorable musical moments with our audiences.”
Volmer’s next appearance with Japan Century Orchestra in December 2026 with programme featuring Brahms’s Tragic Overture and Symphony No.3 and Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto.
