Pablo Heras‑Casado leads three major productions at the Wiener Staatsoper simultaneously
9/3/2026
Pablo Heras‑Casado returns to the Wiener Staatsoper throughout February and March 2026 for an intensive period of artistic activity that highlights the breadth of his repertoire and his close relationship with the house.
This period begins with the Wiener Opernball on 20 February, where he conducts the musical programme of Austria’s most emblematic cultural event, bringing together members of the Wiener Staatsoper Orchestra , the Vienna State Ballet and the singers Pretty Yende and Benjamin Bernheim for the traditional opening festivities at the Staatsoper.
In March, Heras‑Casado returns to the pit for the new production of Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito, directed by Jan Lauwers. The production features a distinguished cast including Katleho Mokhoabane as Tito, Hanna-Elisabeth Müller as Vitellia, Florina Ilie as Servilia, Emily D’Angelo as Sesto, Alma Neuhaus as Annio and Matheus França as Publio. The production runs through seven performances with the première taking place on the 6th March 2026 at the Wiener Staatsoper.
Later in the month, Heras‑Casado turns to György Ligeti’s Le Grand Macabre, conducting also Jan Lauwers’ acclaimed staging. The performances take place on 15, 20 and 22 March 2026. The cast includes Georg Nigl as Nekrotzar, Sarah Aristidou as Chef der Gepopo and Venus, Xavier Sabata as Fürst Go-Go, Marina Nazarova as Amanda, Isabel Signoret as Amando and Wolfgang Bankl as Astradamors.
Across these weeks, Pablo Heras‑Casado’s presence at the Wiener Staatsoper brings together three contrasting artistic worlds: the grandeur of one of Europe’s most celebrated cultural galas, the classical refinement of Mozart’s opera and the avant‑garde theatricality of Ligeti’s surreal masterpiece; highlighting both his versatility and his ongoing artistic connection with the Vienna State Opera.
Pablo Heras‑Casado will also return later in the season to the Wiener Staatsoper for Wagner’s Ring cycle.
