Ólafsson celebrates Kurtág centenary at Müpa Budapest
19/2/2026
On 19 February, pianist Víkingur Ólafsson marked the 100th birthday of composer György Kurtág in a special concert at Müpa Budapest. Ólafsson maintains a close relationship with Kurtág: his 2022 album, From Afar, features solo pieces by the composer on both grand and upright piano. Several pieces from the album were heard at the centenary concert, as well as chamber and orchestral pieces by Kurtág alongside the Danubia Orchestra, clarinettist Csaba Klenyán, violist Máté Szűcs, and Ólafsson’s wife and fellow pianist, Halla Oddný Magnúsdóttir. Ólafsson will continue the Kurtág celebrations on 1 March at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall with musicians of the Philharmonia Orchestra.
