JOSEP PONS NAMED HONORARY MUSIC DIRECTOR OF THE GRAN TEATRE DEL LICEU FROM 2026/27 SEASON
10/7/2025
The Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona has announced that Josep Pons will be named Honorary Music Director beginning with the 2026/27 season, in recognition of his extraordinary artistic leadership and long-standing relationship with the institution.
This honorary title celebrates Pons’ 14-year tenure as Music Director, a period marked by artistic excellence, innovation, and deep commitment. Since his debut at the Liceu in 1993, Pons has been a central figure in shaping the musical identity of the theatre. He officially took the helm as Music Director in 2012, and his final season in this role will be 2025/26.
“I am deeply honoured by this appointment. The Liceu is the theatre I love, with the people I love, in the country I love. These fourteen years have been intense, and not always easy, but always carried out with the utmost commitment. I am especially grateful to the musical forces of the Theatre, and above all, to the orchestra, my fellow travellers. I admire their dedication, energy, and musical and human excellence. My sincere thanks also go to the entire Music Department team, whose patient and discreet work has made everything possible. From the heart, thank you very much.”
Notably, Josep Pons has an impeccable record of being named Honorary Music Director at every institution where he has previously served in a leadership role. This tradition reflects the deep respect and admiration he commands within the classical music world, and the lasting impact of his artistic vision.
