Aude Extrémo triumphs as Azucena
10/6/2025
In a debut that “will go down in history” (Résonances Lyriques, June 2025) Aude Extrémo continues to mark herself out as a dramatic force to be reckoned with. Her first performances as Azucena in Il trovatore, for Opéra de Marseilles under Michele Spotti, have been met with unanimous acclaim.
Read the reports here:
“Aude Extrémo gave a very great performance, finding in Azucena one of her best roles. From a “Stride la vampa!” highlighting the myriad colors of her midrange and, even more, in a “Condotta ell’era in ceppi” highlighting the extremes of the low and high registers; we are amazed by a total scenic and vocal accomplishment to one of the most difficult characters in the repertoire… A performance that will go down in history and an authentically Verdian mezzo-soprano”.
- Résonances Lyriques, June 2025
“Vocally, it is difficult to offer a more homogeneous cast even if, by level of applause, Aude Extrémo finishes on the first step of the podium; and in a deserved way. Her interpretation of Azucena is breathtakingly intense… the mezzo succeeds in a performance that brings tears to the eyes as her emotion is palpable, the backbone of a low, powerful, limpid, hallucinatory song without falling into pathos.”
- Concert Classique, June 2025
“But the revelation of this revival is undoubtedly Aude Extrémo’s Azucena, absolutely prodigious in intensity, with a vocal amplitude that seems limitless, flawless, and with a rare dramatic and scenic investment: she literally plays an anthology Azucena.
- Premiere Loge, June 2025
“listening to her is an unadulterated pleasure, because the range of her voice allows her to sing homogeneously, without resorting to the guttural or chest sounds of some performers. She portrays this painful character with a conviction that will earn her a triumph”.
- Forum Opera, June 2025
“Aude Extrémo commits body and soul to this contrasting role, giving the singing line the vivid intensity of guilt, the desire for revenge and the passage through traumatic ordeals. Her long, enduring and shimmering voice is like the long red scarf she wears, a phantom umbilical cord that she never leaves.”
