Santtu-Matias Rouvali Farewell as Chief Conductor of Gothenburg Symphony
23/5/2025
After eight remarkable years, Santtu-Matias Rouvali ends his tenure as Chief Conductor of Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra with a Gala Concert on 29 May 2025. The celebratory programme features Borodin’s Symphony No.2 and Kapustin’s Piano Concerto, with acclaimed pianist Frank Dupree as soloist.
Throughout his tenure, Rouvali led the orchestra in over 100 performances across Sweden and embarked on acclaimed tours throughout Europe, including appearances in Norway, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Spain, Romania, the Czech Republic, and Belgium.
A highlight of Rouvali’s legacy is the ambitious and widely praised Sibelius cycle recorded with the orchestra. Spanning five CDs, the project includes all seven symphonies alongside En Saga, King Christian II, Pohjola’s Daughter, The Wood Nymph, Valse Triste, and The Tempest. The cycle received numerous rewards, including the Gramophone Editor’s Choice, Choc de Classica, a prize from the German Record Critics’ Award, the Diapason d’Or ‘Découverte’, and Radio Classique’s Trophée. And the journey isn’t over – more to come!
Though stepping down from his official role, Rouvali’s relationship with Gothenburg Symphony is far from over. He will continue to appear as a guest conductor with next concerts already scheduled for autumn 2025.
