Patricia Kopatchinskaja Leads Centenary Tribute to Schönberg’s Pierrot Lunaire at Palau de la Música Catalana
2/5/2025
In a landmark concert at the Palau de la Música Catalana, Patricia Kopatchinskaja, alongside an ensemble of close musical friends — Thomas Kaufmann (cello), Reto Bieri (clarinet), Júlia Gállego (flute), Joonas Ahonen (piano), and Meesung Hong (violin and viola) — celebrated the centenary of Arnold Schönberg’s seminal work Pierrot Lunaire, op. 21 on 29 April 2025. The performance was a powerful tribute to the first-ever Spanish performance of Pierrot Lunaire, which took place at the Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona in 1925, under the direction of Schönberg himself.
This anniversary concert also marked a continuation of the musical journey between Kopatchinskaja and her longtime friend, Sol Gabetta, who performed the programme Sol & Pat from their highly praised CD release at the Centro Nacional de Difusión Musical Madrid and at the Auditorio Felipe VI in Oviedo.
This centenary celebration not only highlighted the enduring legacy of Schönberg’s work but also showcased the deep artistic bond between Kopatchinskaja and her closest friends, celebrating both musical history and the timeless power of Pierrot Lunaire.
