Lisa Batiashvili and Jörg Widmann announced as Berliner Philharmoniker’s Artist in Residence & Composer in Residence
For their 2023/24 season, Berliner Philharmoniker have announced that Lisa Batiashvili and Jörg Widmann are the orchestra’s new Artist in Residence and Composer in Residence respectively.
As Artist in Residence, violinist Lisa Batiashvili will perform with Berliner Philharmoniker at the Europakonzert, which will take place for the first time in her home country of Georgia on 1 May 2024. Other highlights of her residency include a performance with Kirill Petrenko of Karol Szymanowski’s Violin Concerto No.1 as well as chamber music performances with members of Berliner Philharmoniker and the Karajan Academy as well as with Composer in Residence of the 2023/24 season, Jörg Widmann.
“This is a dream come true for me! This residency is the continuation of a long-standing friendship with the Berliner Philharmoniker”
In addition to his work as Composer in Residence, Jörg Widmann will appear as a clarinettist and – making his debut – as a conductor with Berliner Philharmoniker. A highlight of his residency will be the première of his new horn concerto with soloist Stefan Dohr under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle. In an interview, he stated that the main drive for his composing comes from emotion. “I believe very much in the Beethoven phrase: ‘From the heart – may it return to the heart.’ That’s what I wish for as well.” Widmann will also curate a Late-Night concert featuring his own works and, in keeping with the season’s chamber music focus, Schubert’s Der Hirt auf dem Felsen.
