The Trumpet’s Voice
With Jonathan Ware or Martin Cousin, pianists
Matilda Lloyd presents a programme that explores the similarities between the trumpet and the human voice. Historically, the trumpet has been associated with loud military fanfares, however it is a hugely versatile instrument with much lyricism and diction, and it can sing! In this programme, Matilda demonstrates the full emotional range of the trumpet with works inspired by the human voice, highlights of which include Reinhold Glière’s Andante, originally for coloratura soprano, and Manuel de Falla’s vibrant Siete canciones populares Española.

The Trumpet at Tanglewood (America 2026)
With Martin Cousin or Libby Burgess, pianists
This programme explores the extraordinary life of Paul Hindemith: composer of the famous Sonata for Trumpet and Piano. The Sonata was composed in 1939, a pivotal year for Hindemith who was exiled from Germany and moved to the US, where he was invited to join the first faculty at the Tanglewood Music Festival in 1940. All of the music in this programme is connected via Tanglewood in some way, including music by one of Hindemith’s composition students and first black winner of the Prix de Rome Ulysses Kay and by his faculty colleagues Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein.

Fantasia
With Richard Gowers, organ
For her debut album with organ on Chandos Records to be released on 19 September 2025, Matilda pairs Baroque music and four new commissions on the theme of ‘Fantasia’ with her duo parter of over 10 years, Richard Gowers (former organ scholar at King’s College Cambridge).
In this programme, works by J.S. Bach, Krebs and Martini showcase the improvisatory baroque ‘Fantasia’ and structured Toccatas and Fugues, while four new commissions interpret ‘Fantasia’ in a contemporary context, featuring revered British composers: Roxanna Panufnik (Coronation composer), Richard Barnard, Deborah Pritchard and Owain Park.

Prières sans Paroles
With Richard Gowers, organ
This programme juxtaposes works from the Baroque era with French works from the 20th Century. Naji Hakim’s Trumpet Sonata alternates humour and expression, with a fanfare-based first movement, a bluesy atmospheric second movement and a cheerful finale. In contrast, Jean-Michel Damase’s Prières sans Paroles display the lyrical side of the trumpet, while Vierne’s Clair de Lune provides a meditative interlude. Alongside these contemporary French works are pieces heralding from the Baroque era, with Purcell’s sparkling Sonata in D and Giazotto’s Adagio in G minor displaying the triumphant piccolo trumpet sound. A particular highlight of the programme includes our brand-new arrangement of J.S. Bach’s monumental Toccata and Fugue in D minor.

Radiant Dawn
With The Gesualdo Six
Matilda Lloyd joins forces with vocal consort The Gesualdo Six to present a stunning programme that explores different shades of light through music. Works from the Golden Age of polyphony by Tallis and White are juxtaposed with modern compositions by Roxanna Panufnik, Alec Roth and Deborah Pritchard. Highlights include Sir James MacMillan’s In splendoribus sanctorum, a meditative and atmospheric setting from the composer’s ‘Strathclyde Motets’, alongside Richard Barnard’s Aura, co-commissioned by the artists.
Matilda Lloyd and Gesualdo Six recorded the ‘Radiant Dawn’ programme and it will be released on 1st August 2025.
