Jess Gillam Performs UK Premiere of new Clyne Concerto
29/9/2023
Jess Gillam appears with BBC Philharmonic Orchestra on 5 October with the UK premiere of Anna Clyne’s concerto for saxophone and orchestra, Glasslands, under the baton of Ben Gernon.
Following a successful world premiere with Detroit Symphony Orchestra and Han-Na Chang in February this year, Gillam performs the Clyne with several other orchestras worldwide, including co-commissioners Orquesta Sinfónica de Castilla y León, Naples Philharmonic and NAC Orchestra Ottawa this season. With Glasslands, Anna Clyne aimed to “conjure an imaginary world of three realms governed by the banshee”. Clyne’s mystical and vibrant approach to composition is an exquisite match for Gillam’s equally vibrant performance style. The programme also includes Elgar’s Cockaigne, Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite, and Beethoven’s much-loved Symphony No.5.
