Sakari Oramo renews with BBC Symphony Orchestra until 2020

The BBC Symphony Orchestra announced today that it has extended Sakari Oramo​’s Chief Conductor contract for a further four years through to 2020. Since beginning his role at the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the First Night of the Proms in 2013, Oramo has led the orchestra through highlights including a critically-lauded Nielsen symphony cycle, a performance of Mahler’s Symphony No.1 and the world premiere of Colin Matthews’ BBC commission Traces Remain.

Following three recent BBC Proms performances, including his second First Night of the Proms and two concerts marking the 150th anniversary of Sibelius, Oramo launched the BBC SO’s 2015/16 Barbican season last night with a performance of Mahler’s Symphony No.3. Further highlights of the season will see Oramo lead the orchestra in Elgar’s Symphonies Nos.1 and 2 as well as Strauss’s Alpine Symphony.
