The production and recording of Peter Grimes on Aldeburgh beach, conducted by Steuart Bedford as part of the 2013 Aldeburgh Festival, has won two major industry prizes in the space of 24 hours.
On 7 April the production was announced as winner in the Britten Anniversary Production category at the International Opera Awards. Additionally, mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton took the Young Singer of the Year Award.
The following day, the BBC Music Magazine Awards honoured the live CD release on Signum Classics with its Opera Award at a ceremony held at King’s Place, London.
Accepting the award alongside tenor Alan Oke on behalf of the cast and production teams, Bedford paid tribute to all involved in the landmark project.
Other winners announced at the Kings Place ceremony included George Benjamin’s Written on Skin, which features a powerful performance by soprano Barbara Hannigan. The Nimbus recording wins in the Premiere Recording category.
