Lisa Batiashvili named New York Philharmonic Artist in Residence for 2014 – 15
22/1/2014
The New York Philharmonic has announced that Lisa Batiashvili will be the 2014/15 Mary and James G. Wallach Artist-in-Residence. The news comes as part of the orchestra’s season announcement at New York’s Greene Space on 22 January.
Lisa starts her residency in October 2014, performing Brahms’ Violin Concerto with Music Director Alan Gilbert. In February 2015 she performs Barber’s Violin Concerto under David Zinman – followed by a recital with Paul Lewis in March. In April, she will be joined by François Leleux for Bach’s Concerto for Violin and Oboe as well as the U.S. premiere of Thierry Escaich’s Concerto for Violin and Oboe, co-commissioned by the New York Philharmonic.
At the live-streamed event, Lisa described the residency as “one of the biggest musical gifts that I could get,” while Alan Gilbert noted that “Lisa is already an important member of the New York Phil family” – referring to her frequent returns to the orchestra in recent seasons.
Lisa previously held an equivalent position with the Staatskapelle Dresden, where she was Capell-Virtuosin during the 12/13 season. She is the New York Philharmonic’s sixth Artist-in-Residence, succeeding Yefim Bronfman, Emanuel Ax, Frank Peter Zimmermann, Anne-Sophie Mutter and Thomas Hampson.
