CHARLOTTE BRAY’S IN AN ETERNAL DUSK PREMIERES AT KÖLNER PHILHARMONIE
25/9/2025
On 28 September, In an Eternal Dusk by Charlotte Bray premieres at Kölner Philharmonie with Áron Horváth on cimbalom. This 10-minute work, written for solo cimbalom, is commissioned by Müpa Budapest, Philharmonie Luxembourg and the European Concert Hall Organisation (ECHO).
Charlotte Bray explains that the “title and much of the inspiration for this solo cimbalom piece is taken from Sholeh Wolpé’s excellent translation of Forugh Farrokhzad’s poem. The music is gentle and expressive, “distant sounds” moving freely “unfixed and vagrant like a drifting breeze”. It is intricate, often hearing two ‘voices’ – doves, in the poem – “crossing in the wind”. Introverted and shadowy, we are isolated in an internal world, caught between day and night – an onerous, mysterious “strange land”.”
