“This came as no surprise to connoisseurs: Josh Lovell, a member of the ensemble of the Vienna State Opera since 2019, won this year’s Hans Gabor Belvedere Competition. The Canadian tenor attracted the attention of Viennese opera lovers from his first appearances in the house on the Ring: the pleasantly bright but softly timbred voice is agile, confident in the treble and gifted for highly expressive creative art. Among other things, Lovell was a member of the premiere cast in the fairytale Britten production “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and most recently in Henze’s “Betrayed Sea”. Above all, Lovell made people sit up and take notice in the closing gala of the young ensemble of Dominique Meyer’s era with the immaculately phrased “Aura amorosa” from Mozart’s “Così fan tutte”. In addition to Noboru in the revival of the Henze opera, Lovell will also sing Fenton in Verdi’s “Falstaff” for the first time next season.”
