27/1/2014
The 2014/15 International Piano Series has been announced at a press launch at London’s Southbank Centre.
Introducing the programme, Southbank Centre Head of Classical Music Gillian Moore said: “The series welcomes some of the greatest pianists of the present day. It is a chance to savour the artistry of the world’s leading performers, and discover stars of the future.”
Royal Festival Hall recitals in the 14/15 season feature Maurizio Pollini; Mitsuko Uchida, who performs works by Beethoven and Schubert, Arcadi Volodos (Schubert, Brahms and Schumann), Yundi, Stephen Hough (Debussy & Chopin) and Ivo Pogorelich – who returns to the series after many years with a programme of Liszt, Schumann, Stravinsky and Brahms.
The series opens with Daniil Trifonov, winner of the 2011 Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition, who made his highly successful debut in the series in 2012. He performs Bach, Beethoven and Liszt. Debut artists in this coming season are Denis Matsuev, with a programme of Tchaikovsky, Liszt and Rachmaninov and Korean pianist Sunwook Kim (Bach, Beethoven and Mussorgsky).
Louis Lortie offers a programme of Fauré and Scriabin; also performing Scriabin is Yevgeny Sudbin, alongside works by Haydn, Beethoven Tchaikovsky, Chopin and Saint-Saëns.
Dejan Lazic performs an intriguing programme of CPE Bach, Britten, Domenico Scarlatti and Bartók and Lukáš Vondráček offers works by Graham Lack, Schumann, Liszt and Rachmaninov.
Other exciting young artists in the series include Alexandre Tharaud (with Schubert, Mahler, Couperin and Ravel), Alexei Volodin (Schubert, Chopin and Schumann) and Jonathan Biss (Berg, Schoenberg, Schumann and Beethoven).
The Series concludes with a rare duo recital by Alice Sara Ott and Francesco Tristano, who perform a programme including the two-piano arrangement of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring.
Tickets will be available for Southbank Centre members from 25 February, and on general sale from 4 March 2014.
