Conductor, soloist, chamber musician, and pedagogue: Christoph Poppen has made a name for himself in diverse roles in the international musical world, winning many awards along the way.

During the 2014/15 season, Poppen continues a close collaboration with the Kölner Kammerorchester in his role as Principal Conductor and returns to Orchestra Haydn of Bolzano and Trento, Orchestra del Teatro Carlo Felice, Orchestre d’Auvergne, Athens State Orchestra and Odense Symphoniorkester. Other appearances include reinvitations to Basel and Detmold Chamber Orchestras. In Asia he debuts with the Tongyeong Festival Orchestra and Gidon Kremer and gives several performances in Hong Kong.

In August 2006, Poppen was appointed Music Director of the Radio Symphony Orchestra Saarbrücken and was in charge of overseeing and artistically guiding the merger of his orchestra with the Radio Orchestra Kaiserslautern. He was Music Director of the newly formed Deutsche Radio Philharmonie from August 2007 until 2011.

A frequent guest conductor, he has appeared with the Bamberger Symphoniker, the Deutsches Sinfonie-Orchester Berlin, NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover, Staatskapelle Dresden, Wiener Symphoniker, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Amsterdam Sinfonietta, Singapore Symphony, Detroit and Indianapolis Symphonies, the Danish National Symphony Orchestra and Camerata Salzburg, amongst many others. He is also a sought-after opera conductor, having recently led new productions of Gluck’s Iphigénie en Aulide at Staatsoper Stuttgart and Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte at Oper Frankfurt and La clemenza di Tito with the Tiroler Landestheater in Innsbruck.

Christoph Poppen’s extensive discography, much of which was recorded for ECM Records, covers a large range of repertoire including works by Tigran Mansurian, Sofia Gubaidulina, Karl Amadeus Hartmann and Giacinto Scelsi as well as Mozart or Schubert.
