
Mari Samuelsen releases album LYS & new visual collaborative live concert programme

Violinist Mari Samuelsen releases LYS, her second full length album on Deutsche Grammophon, which sees a bold new curation of dynamic and original music dedicated and influenced by life and light. LYS – Norwegian for “Light” – presents music by thirteen female composers, from Hildegard von Bingen to Hildur Guðnadóttir, combining specially commissioned works with new arrangements of existing pieces. The fourteen tracks are woven together to create a meditative, and energising playlist on this life-giving phenomenon. The Norwegian violinist’s eclectic programme moves through light’s infinitely subtle qualities to reveal a musical world of boundless shades of emotion and expression. Having previously appeared as soloist and recitalist on many of the world’s leading stages, including New York’s Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, London’s Barbican Centre, Berlin’s Konzerthaus and Paris’ Philharmonie to mention but a few. This album, co-produced by Mari herself, marks another successful milestone year, including performances with BBC Concert Orchestra (linked to listen again on BBC), Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, NAC Ottawa, Noord Nederlands Orkest and Casco Philharmonic over the summer and performances at Viva Muscia! Festival and Wonderfeel Festival.
Mari Samuelsen continuously brings invigorating and innovative ideas to her releases and performances, her programming weaves together old and new, neo-classical with baroque, all with fresh and energetic staging and lighting.
2023 sees the launch of an immersive multi-genre show combining atmospheric music, visual arts, dazzling light design and choreography in partnership with visual design artist Nathan Scheuer and Director Kitty McNamee. Following the success of similar programmes such as Meditation & Sleep by Max Richter, this is playlist concert guarantees success amongst young and diverse, new audiences to violin, orchestral and post classical audience, led by Mari’s own global fanbase.
