OVERVIEW
A principal leader of Boston’s arts community since 1815, the Handel and Haydn Society is dedicated to its mission to perform baroque and classical music at the highest levels of artistic excellence and to share that music with as large and diverse an audience as possible through concert performances at Symphony and Jordan Halls, tours, recordings, radio broadcasts, and outreach initiatives to students and underserved communities.
As Handel and Haydn plans for its Bicentennial in 2015, Artistic Director Harry Christophers has set forth ambitious artistic plans which position the Society’s core identity as performer, educator, resource center and community partner. As part of the celebration, each new season will incorporate works that are significant to the Society’s history as well as those never before played. Under Christophers, the Period Instrument Orchestra and Chorus is internationally recognized in the field of Historically Informed Performance. Handel and Haydn is the United States’ oldest continuously performing arts organization and has a longstanding commitment to excellence and innovation, particularly in the field of music education.
REVIEWS
“The orchestra performed on high alert all evening - a fine period ensemble, with its vibratoless playing and careful bowing, is a joy to hear…. An inspired reading of a work that deserves its place on everyone’s holiday wish list.” (Boston Herald, December 2010)
“Harry Christophers’ Messiah proved vibrant, affecting and expert.” (The Wall Street Journal, January 2010)
“The orchestra’s period instruments created beautiful and surprising blends of sounds and allowed for a lovely interplay of voices, as string bow-strokes sounded remarkably like woodwind accents, and vice versa.” (Boston Globe, November 2009)
