Orchestras and Ensembles

Iceland Symphony Orchestra

The relationship between the British conductor, Rumon Gamba and the Iceland Symphony Orchestra has flourished. Following several critically acclaimed engagements together, Gamba was invited in 2002 to become Chief Conductor and Music Director and has just extended this to the 2008/09 season.

"The Iceland Symphony Orchestra has a very powerful sound, yet remains musically very flexible. They always approach new works with a fresh spirit."

– Rumon Gamba

Their debut tour of Germany together included a sold-out performance at Cologne's Philharmonie, and was extremely well received, resulting in re-invitations in Cologne and Dusseldorf. The orchestra, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2000, gives around 60 concerts per season. As well as their concert series in Rekyjavik they regularly perform around Europe, and recently toured to cities throughout North America. Over the years many renowned guest artists have enriched the ISO, most notably Vladimir Ashkenazy, the late Yehudi Menuhin, André Previn, Daniel Barenboim, Anne-Sophie Mutter and Mstislav Rostropovich, to mention a few.
