The Bamberg Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1946 by former members of the German Philharmonic Orchestra of Prague and by musicians from Karlsbad and Schlesien who came to Bamberg as refugees from the Second World War. Its Bohemian musical style, its discipline, its virtuosity, and its sound culture made the orchestra an instant success.
With their Chief Conductor Jonathan Nott, the Orchestra are now wowing audiences with the fresh programming ideas fast becoming their speciality. The Guardian recently dedicated a double page feature to Jonathan Nott which opened with the headline "He created a mini-revolution in Germany. Can Jonathan Nott now do the same in Britain?"
With an almost unprecedented five-concert residency at the 2005 Edinburgh International Festival, as well as a BBC Prom concert the following year, this combination has certainly been making an impact. Further afield, Bamberg and Nott have performed in the US as well as Japan.
