The Scottish Ensemble tours to China and Taiwan with Alison Balsom
The Scottish Ensemble toured to China and Taiwan in May, with trumpeter Alison Balsom. The Ensemble performed broad-ranging programmes including Britten’s Simple Symphony, Biber’s Battalia, Geminiani’s La folia, James MacMillan’s Seraph (featuring Balsom as soloist), Holst’s St. Paul’s Suite, and music by Handel, Vivaldi and Purcell - as well as arrangements by Balsom of Albinoni and Vivaldi concerti.
The tour opened at Beijing’s National Centre for Performing Arts on 20 May. Education and outreach projects also took place during the group’s time in the city. Listen to China Radio Internationalprogramme on the Ensemble’s outreach project in Beijing.
The Ensemble then traveled to Shanghai Concert Hall (23), Taipei’s National Concert Hall (25) and Kaohsiung Cultural Centre (26 May). The concerts in Beijing and Shanghai included Tan Dun’s Crouching Tiger Concerto for erhu and chamber orchestra, featuring a guest appearance by erhu player Tan Wei.
The Ensemble and Balsom also recently made a highly successful tour together in the US with this programme - their musical chemistry creating public excitement and earning critical acclaim.
