Scottish Ensemble complete tour to Istanbul with Alison Balsom
The Scottish Ensemble made an acclaimed debut at a packed Is Sanat Hall in Istanbul on 17 March, together with trumpeter Alison Balsom. The programme, featuring Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky, and Balsom’s own transcription of a Vivaldi Violin Concerto, also featured the Turkish premiere of James Macmillan’s Seraph, written for Balsom herself.
Alexandra Ivanoff complimented the Ensemble and Balsom in Today's Zaman " the Scottish Ensemble is so finely calibrated, so organically one mind, that at times I thought I was listening to one giant organ...Every synapse attuned to each other, the Scottish Ensemble’s performance of this piece was simply devastating."
This programme was performed to great success around the UK recently as part of Orchestras Live and Music Nation, part of the London's 2012 Cultural Olympiad. EMI's CD of the work featuring Balsom and the ensemble reached the top of the classical charts in early 2012.
