Rambert Dance Company awarded commission for 2012 Cultural Olympiad
20 outstanding pieces of new music will feature centre stage of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad, as London hosts the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Rambert Dance Company is the only dance company to receive one of these awards. The 20 works commissioned for New Music 20x12 each last 12 minutes and offer a snapshot of the quality and diversity of new music in the UK.
The piece will pay homage to Debussy’s Prélude à L’après-midi d’un faune, which has a special significance for Rambert Dance Company. The original ballet was choreographed for Diaghilev’s legendary Ballets Russes by Nijinsky who, at that time was often assisted in his choreography by a young Polish woman, Marie Rambert. She later went on to found Rambert Dance Company and the Prélude then became a popular piece in the company’s repertoire with 2012 marking the centenary of the work.
Rambert Dance Company will create a new version, choreographed by the company’s Artistic Director Mark Baldwin and composed by their Music Fellow, Gavin Higgins. More information on the award can be found at:
