Paavo Järvi and Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen take their acclaimed Fidelio project to Japan

8 November 2013

Following their highly successful Schumann cycle in Tokyo in December 2010, The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen and Paavo Järvi returned to Japan in November 2013 for five concerts, including two performances of their acclaimed semi-staging of Fidelio directed by Leah Hausman, which was originally presented at the 2013 Beethovenfest Bonn. The performances there received the following review from Markus Schwering in the General Anzeiger: “The Kammerphilharmonie conducted by Järvi were not just players here, but were the real dramatic centre of the performance.”

Performances of Fidelio took place in Yokohama on 28 and 30 November, where the cast featured Burkhard Fritz as Florestan, Emily Magee as Leonore, Golda Schultz as Marzelline, Falk Struckmann as Pizzaro, Dethlef Roth as Don Fernando, Dimitry Ivashchenko as Rocco and Julian Prégardien as Jaquino.

The tour opened in Sapporo on 21 November, with Beethoven’s Symphonies Nos. 3 & 4 and the Overture to Fidelio; the programme was repeated in Nagoya on 23 November and Musashino on 29 November.

Following their tour of Japan, the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie and Järvi traveled to South Korea for concerts in Seoul on 4 and 5 December. They performed programmes featuring Beethoven’s Symphonies Nos. 3, 4, 5 & 7 across the two dates, which marked the orchestra’s debut in the country.
