HarrisonParrott artists and touring orchestras feature in BBC Proms

Seventeen HarrisonParrott artists and three touring orchestras feature in the 2013 BBC Proms.

Conducting the First Night on 12 July, Sakari Oramo also makes his debut as Chief Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra on this evening. The programme includes works by Britten, Lutosławski and Vaughan Williams. Stephen Hough is soloist in Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. Hough makes a second appearance on 19 August, performing Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No.1 with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.

Aga Mikolaj sings the role of Woglinde in Daniel Barenboim’s Ring cycle – the centrepiece of the Proms’ Wagner strand for 2013. She features in Das Rheingold on 22 July and Götterdämmerung on 28 July. Still with Wagner, Ain Anger sings the role of Landgraf in Tannhäuser on 4 August, with the Chorus of Deutsche Oper Berlin and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra conducted by Donald Runnicles.

Premiere performances featuring HarrisonParrott artists include the world premiere on 2 August of a work by Naresh Sohal, given by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra conducted by Peter Oundjian. The programme also features works by Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov - Piano Concerto No.3, with soloist Nikolai Lugansky. On 21 August, Sakari Oramo conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra in the world premiere of a new work by Param Vir, as well as music by Bantock and Elgar, and Sibelius’ Violin Concerto - with soloist Lisa Batiashvili. Peter Eötvös’ violin concerto, DoReMi, receives its UK premiere on 29 August, performed by Midori, with the Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen.

On 1 August, Oliver Knussen conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra in a programme of Henze, Stravinsky and Tippett - whose opera The Midsummer Marriage is performed on 16 August, featuring soprano Erin Wall in the role of Jenifer. The BBC Symphony Orchestra and choral forces are conducted by Sir Andrew Davis.

Also in August, Jean-Efflam Bavouzet plays Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No.2 on 5 August, in a concert with the BBC Philharmonic conducted by Gianandrea Noseda, whilst on 14 August Kirill Karabits conducts the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in a programme of Janáček, Beethoven and Tchaikovsky.

September Proms feature Osmo Vänskä conducting the BBC Symphony Orchestra in Górecki, Vaughan Williams and Tchaikovsky on 4 September, and Lorin Maazel, who conducts the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in a programme of Bach and Bruckner on 6 September.

Touring orchestras at the Proms include the Bamberger Symphoniker conducted by Jonathan Nott, who bring a programme of Lachenmann and Mahler on 15 July. On 1 September, the Orchestre de Paris and Paavo Järvi give a programme featuring Pärt, Berlioz and Saint-Saëns - and Britten’s Violin Concerto, with soloist Janine Jansen.

The Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi (known familiarly as LaVerdi) and their Music Director Xian Zhang make their Proms debuts on 5 September. Zhang is one of only two female conductors to lead a full, main evening Prom this year. They perform a programme of Verdi overtures and arias – featuring tenor Joseph Calleja – and Tchaikovsky’s Manfred Symphony.
