Christoph Poppen appointed Principal Guest Conductor of Kölner Kammerorchester

5 June 2013

Kölner Kammerorchester has appointed Christoph Poppen as Principal Guest Conductor, initially for a four-year period, beginning in 2013/14 season.

During his first season in the role, Christoph Poppen conducts three concerts in the Kölner Philharmonie and four guest concerts in other cities.

Christoph Poppen said of his new position: “The Kölner Kammerorchester is experiencing the beginning of a new era and I am thrilled to be able to make those important steps in these exciting times, together with the Orchestra. The chamber orchestra repertoire has always been very dear to me and after having primarily been occupied with the symphonic repertoire in recent years, I am particularly happy to rekindle my love for this music.”

Poppen’s programmes with the orchestra initially focus on Mozart and Haydn, including concerts with soloists Juliane Banse and Maria João Pires. Later, he celebrates the 195th anniversary of Offenbach’s birth, in a programme featuring his virtuoso works for cello and orchestra, with Claudio Bohórquez as soloist.

A renowned conductor, violin soloist and chamber musician, recent highlights of Poppen’s season have included a return to the Wiener Symphoniker to conduct their traditional New Year’s Eve Concert at the Wiener Konzerthaus, and a new production of Gluck’s Iphigénie en Aulide at Staatsoper Stuttgart.
