Benjamin Schmid and Susanna Mälkki each win Deutschen Schallplattenpreis

18 February 2013

Violinist Benjamin Schmid and conductor Susanna Mälkki have been given awards by the Deutsche Schallplattenkritik, in the first of their 2013 prizes, which are announced quarterly.

Benjamin Schmid’s Farao Classics release of music by Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari, with the Oviedo Filarmonia conducted by Friedrich Haider, has won in the Orchestral category. Schmid performs Wolf-Ferrari’s Violin Concerto and the CD also features orchestral music from his operas. The citation for the award reads: “This recording is a glowing plea for the Romantic but little known violin concerto by Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari… You can feel that for the artists and producers this recording has been an affair of the heart.”

In the Contemporary Music category, the Schallplattenkritik prize recognizes Susanna Mälkki’s Kairos Music CD, with Ensemble intercontemporain, clarinettist Alain Billard and IRCAM Studio, of music by Yann Robin. The citation reads “… exuberant, with an enormous energy of natural forces… This is a truly accomplished success for the Ensemble Intercontemporain under Susanna Mälkki.”
