Derek Welton debuts as Wotan and at Bayreuth
21/7/2017
This summer, Derek Welton made his debut at Bayreuther Festspiele as Klingsor in Uwe ERIC Laufenberg’s production of Parsifal. Conducted by Hartmut Haenchen and opened on 27 July.
An emerging new voice to note in the Wagnerian repertoire, these Bayreuth performances come hot on the heels of an acclaimed debut as Wotan (Das Rheingold) at Deutsche Oper Berlin, conducted by Donald Runnicles, and in the last ever presentation of Götz Friedrich’s historic production. Derek can also be heard as Heerrufer on the DVD release of Lohengrin, recorded live from Semperoper Dresden and conducted by Music Director Christian Thielemann.
Derek’s Wagnerian theme continues next season when he reunites with Thielemann at Semperoper Dresden as Donner (Das Rheingold) and with Runnicles at Deutsche Oper Berlin as Heerrufer. Welton sings Heerrufer in Kasper Holten’s production of Lohengrin for Deutsche Oper Berlin under Donald Runnicles, opening 10 September.
