Xian Zhang appointed Music Director of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra
16/11/2015
The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra has appointed Xian Zhang as its Music Director, effective from the start of the 2016/17 season. The four-year appointment cements a partnership which received critical acclaim ever since their first performances together back in 2010.
Reviewing their most recent collaboration in May, the New Jersey Star-Ledger praised Zhang’s “innate musicality and ability to communicate intention with clarity”, going on to say: “once again Zhang proved a thrilling leader who has already established a strong rapport with the orchestra … what holds the audience is the way she infuses scores with vitality and detail, and the highly engaged playing of the NJSO.”
Commenting on the appointment, Xian Zhang said “I remember there was an instant connection the first time I conducted the NJSO. I am proud to become the leader of an orchestra that shares my belief in the power of music to transform lives both in and outside of the concert hall.”
Zhang returns to the orchestra in April 2016 to conduct a programme of Barber and Tchaikovsky.
