The International Piano Series at London’s Southbank Centre has announced its 2011/12 season programme.
Pierre-Laurent Aimard will head up the celebrations for the 200th anniversary of the birth of Franz Liszt which falls in 2011, reflecting on Liszt the innovator in two fascinating programmes in November (8) and December (7). Aimard will also perform Boulez’s complete works for piano alongside Tamara Stefanovich (2 October) as part of the wider Boulez Weekend celebrations.
Liszt also features in Alice-Sara Ott’s IPS debut recital on 22 November alongside music by Mozart, Beethoven and Chopin. A day-long Liszt Forum at the Purcell Room in October, led by the foremost experts on the composer, completes the anniversary celebrations.
Maurizio Pollini returns to the Royal Festival Hall on 6 March for a recital in his 70th birthday year and there will be a chance to hear Jean-Efflam Bavouzet perform his virtuosic piano arrangement of Debussy’s Jeux on 23 October. In January Peter Jablonski will perform a programme of American and Scandinavian music and François-Frédéric Guy makes a return with his much-acclaimed interpretation of the Beethoven Hammerklavier Sonata in March. Leif Ove Andsnes, Mitsuko Uchida, Arcadi Volodos, Lang Lang and Yuja Wang amongst many others complete the season’s impressive line-up.
The International Piano Series continues to provide a platform for the world’s most outstanding pianists at both the Queen Elizabeth and Royal Festival Halls. The series is devised, developed and co-ordinated by HarrisonParrott.
