Sol Gabetta wins the 2010 Gramophone Young Artist of the Year

4 October 2010

Sol Gabetta has been named the 2010 Young Artist of the Year by Gramophone magazine at their annual awards ceremony in London. The Argentinean cellist, now 29, first gained major international attention in 2004 when, as the winner of Credit Suisse Young Artist Award, she performed at the Lucerne Festival with the Wiener Philharmoniker under Valery Gergiev. Her first album for Sony appeared in 2006 and went straight to the top of the classical charts in Germany, whilst her recent interpretation of Elgar’s Cello Concerto was hailed as “one of the best around”. The Gramophone awards are among classical music’s most prestigious prizes, given for outstanding contributions on disc. Sol Gabetta joins an illustrious list of past winners of the Young Artist of the Year award which includes Maxim Vengerov, Vasily Petrenko, Yuja Wang and Maxim Rysanov.

Also nominated for awards were pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet and conductor Oliver Knussen.
