The Australian Youth Orchestra embark on major tour
The Australian Youth Orchestra’s 20th international tour across three continents with celebrated international conductor Sir Mark Elder is underway. Taking in Australia, Asia and Europe – the tour is set to be their most ambitious yet.
They begin by giving concerts in Sydney and Canberra before moving on to China to perform in Shanghai, Beijing and Tianjin with pianist Alexey Yemtsov. On the programme is Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 and Rachmaninov’s Symphony No. 2.
They then undertake the third and final leg with concerts in Harrogate, Copenhagen, Amsterdam and a televised concert at the BBC Proms. The Europe concerts will showcase a work by their compatriot, Brett Dean, alongside Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10 and Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn with mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Gubanova.
