Tan Dun began his musical career with the Peking Opera, and his own idealism shapes a highly unusual career. The power of his vision has put him in a position to shape and lead programmes with orchestras without pursuing a conventional conducting career. As a conductor whose primary interest is in creating multi-cultural, multi-media programmes with today’s emerging music to break up the boundaries, Tan has been engaged by the Boston Symphony, National Orchestra de Lyon, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Montreal Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, BBC Symphony, National Orchestra of France, and the NHK Symphony of Japan.
Recent collaborations include the Concerto for Water Percussion and Orchestra for the New York Philharmonic with Kurt Masur and soloist Christopher Lamb; Tea, an opera commissioned by Japan’s Suntory Hall, in a co-production with the Netherlands Opera and Shanghai Grand Theatre; the film score for Zhang Yi-Mou’s new film Hero; The Map: Concerto for Cello, Video and Orchestra, for Yo-Yo Ma and the Boston Symphony; and works for L.A. Philharmonic for the opening of Disney Hall and Berlin Philharmonic.
