For his artistic vision that transcends fashions and trends, Stephen Hough was awarded a prestigious MacArthur Fellowship in 2001, joining prominent scientists, writers and others who have made unique contributions to contemporary life.
Hough has appeared with most of the major European and American orchestras and plays recitals in major concert series around the world. He is a regular guest at festivals such as Salzburg, Mostly Mozart, Tanglewood, and Edinburgh. Recent and upcoming highlights include performances with the New York and Los Angeles Philharmonics, Cleveland; Philadelphia and Russian National Orchestras; San Francisco, Pittsburgh and Saint Louis Symphony Orchestras; London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Berliner Philharmoniker – on worldwide TV with Sir Simon Rattle. At the 2009 BBC Proms Hough performed all four Tchaikovsky works for piano and orchestra.
Hough’s catalogue of over 40 CDs have garnered Grammy nominations and eight Gramophone Awards, including ‘Record of the Year’ in 1996 and 2003 and the Gramophone ‘Gold Disc’ in 2008. Two Hyperion recordings are due for release in April 2010: a disc of Chopin’s late masterpieces and a two-disc set featuring all of the Tchaikovsky works for piano and orchestra with the Minnesota Orchestra and Osmo Vänskä .
Hough is also an avid writer and composer. He has written for The Guardian, The Times, and was invited by The Telegraph in December 2008 to start a cultural blog. His book The Bible as Prayer was published by Continuum in 2007; he has published numerous compositions with Josef Weinberger Ltd.
