At the age of eleven he had his first composition lessons with Kay Westermann, followed by further studies with Hans Werner Henze, Wilfried Hiller and Wolfgang Rihm. For his achievments in composition in 2002 he received the Schneider-Schott Award and the Paul Hindemith Prize followed by an award from the Ernst-von-Siemens Music Foundation in 2003.
Widmann's oeuvre includes a large number of chamber music works, often with the clarinet at their core; scenic works such as his first full-length opera Das Gesicht im Spiegel (2003); and large-scale orchestral works. Leading orchestras such as the Deutsches Sinfonie-Orchester Berlin and Kent Nagano, and Munich Philharmonic and Christian Thielemann have commissioned works from him. Performances of works by Jörg Widmann form a regular part of international festival and concert programmes. He has been invited as composer in residence with the DSO Berlin, 2004 Salzburg Festival, Oxford Chamber Music Festival, Dortmund Konzerthaus, Essen Philharmonie, Heidelberg Spring Festival and many more.
